What is Tooth Extraction?

Tooth extractions are one of the common dental procedures, but they can still be quite daunting for patients. After all, nobody likes the idea of having a tooth pulled. However, it is important to remember that tooth extractions are typically only performed when other treatment options have failed. In other words, your dentist will only recommend an extraction if it is absolutely necessary.

There are two main types of extractions: simple and surgical extraction.

Simple Extraction

Simple extractions are performed on teeth that are visible in the mouth and can be removed with simple tools, such as forceps.

Surgical Extraction

Surgical extractions are necessary for teeth that have not fully erupted or that have broken off at the gum line. The procedure generally involves making an incision in the gum tissue and then using special instruments to remove the tooth.

While tooth extractions are generally safe, they can occasionally lead to complications, such as infection or damage to other teeth. Overall, it is important to talk to your dentist beforehand to ensure that you understand the risks involved.

How does tooth extraction work?

The most common reason for tooth extraction is crowding or tooth decay. In some cases, tooth extraction may also be necessary to prepare for orthodontic treatment.

The first step is to examine the tooth in question and take x-rays to get a clear picture of the root structure. This helps the dentist or oral surgeon determine whether the tooth can be removed safely.

Next, the area around the tooth will be numbed with local anesthesia. This helps to ensure that you remain comfortable throughout the procedure. Once the anesthesia has taken effect, your dentist or oral surgeon will use dental tools to loosen your tooth and then delicately take it out of its socket.

If your tooth is severely decaying or has broken off at the gum line, your dentist may need to create incisions in your gums in order to reach it.

For impacted teeth, they will remove the gum and bone tissue covering it. Then, they will dislodge the tooth by gently rocking it back and forth using forceps. The tooth may be extracted in its entirety or sections.

After a tooth has been extracted, the empty socket must be cleansed and disinfected. The dentist may also recommend a dental bone graft to stop jaw bone loss. At last, sutures may be used to aid in the healing process.

Our Tooth Extraction Services

Tooth Extraction

Oftentimes, tooth extraction is unavoidable and may be the only option. You may need to have a tooth or teeth extracted for a variety of reasons, including:

  • To make room for braces or dental implants

  • If your tooth is severely decayed or damaged

  • If your tooth is infected

  • If you have wisdom teeth that are causing pain or crowding

No matter the reason, our team at Gorgeous Smiles Dentistry is here to help. We offer both simple and surgical tooth extractions, and our experienced general dentists will work to ensure that the process is as smooth and painless as possible for you.

The hole left behind after your extraction should close up within 1-2 weeks. However, this time frame can vary from patient to patient. If you experience anything out of the ordinary, please don't hesitate to schedule a visit with us or give our office a call.

Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth are the third and final set of molars, typically during the late teenage years or early adulthood. For some people, wisdom teeth cause no problems and can be easily accommodated by the mouth. However, this is not always the case.

Wisdom teeth can sometimes become impacted, meaning they get stuck under the gum line and fail to erupt properly. Impacted wisdom teeth may cause many problems, including pain, infection, and damage to surrounding permanent teeth. In some cases, they may need to be removed.

At Gorgeous Smiles Dentistry, we offer wisdom teeth removal services to help you avoid these problems. We will work with you to determine if extraction is necessary and if so, we will carefully remove your wisdom teeth while ensuring that you are as comfortable as possible.

FAQ

How long does it take to recover from a tooth extraction?
The initial healing process usually takes about 24 hours, during which time it is important to keep the area clean and free of debris. After the initial healing is complete, it can take another week or two for the area to close up fully.

During this time, it is important to eat soft foods and avoid using straws, which can cause the extraction site to re-open. In most cases, people fully recover within a few weeks with no long-term problems.

However, in some cases, complications can occur. If you experience excessive bleeding, swelling, or pain, immediately contact our office.
How painful is a tooth extraction?
Even though a local anaesthetic is used to numb the area, you may still feel some pressure during the procedure. After the anaesthetic wears off, you may experience some discomfort. To help manage the pain, we recommend taking over-the-counter pain medication and applying ice to the area.

Of course, everyone experiences pain differently, so it is impossible to say definitively how much pain you will feel. However, the vast majority of patients find that the pain is manageable and that it quickly subsides after the procedure is complete.
How long does the pain last after tooth extraction?
Depending on the complexity of the extraction and your individual pain tolerance, you may experience some discomfort for a day or two after the procedure. However, this is usually manageable with over-the-counter pain medication.

If you experience any excessive bleeding, swelling, or pain, please contact our office immediately. These could be signs of a more serious problem.
What are the risks of tooth extraction?

As with any medical procedure, there are some risks associated with tooth extraction. However, these risks are usually minor and can be easily managed. Some of the most common complications include:

  • Excessive bleeding

  • Swelling

  • Pain

  • Infection

  • Dry socket (when the blood clot that forms in the extraction site is dislodged prematurely)

Most cases, these complications can be easily managed with medication or other simple treatments. However, if you experience any of these problems, please contact our office so that we can provide the appropriate care.

What to expect when getting teeth removed?
The pain and bleeding after tooth extraction are normal. For the first day, you can expect some swelling and residual bleeding. However, if either of these symptoms is still severe more than four hours after your procedure, you should call your dentist.

If you are concerned about dental issues concerning your children, keep in mind that baby teeth do not need to be preserved. However, if the tooth is knocked out as a result of an injury, you should arrange an appointment to have your dentist examine the gums and surrounding teeth for signs of stress or damage.
How much does it cost to get a tooth pulled?
The cost of tooth extraction can vary depending on the complexity of the procedure. However, in most cases, it will cost between $200 and $600. If you have dental insurance, it may cover a portion of the cost. For more information, please call our office.
